Community Corrections holds on purchases and new personnel

In light of the recent budgetary concerns, the Dubois County Community Corrections Board decided to hold off on expenditures and staffing needs.

The board voted unanimously to not fill a counselor position recently vacated at Dubois County Community Corrections.

They also declined a request by director J.P. Weisheit to purchase a new vehicle to replace two vehicles the department chooses not to use. One vehicle won’t start and another vehicle has problems and is considered unfit to drive.

The board recommended Weisheit and assistant director Jenny Fuhs will survey the corrections participants to see if any are mechanics. Sheriff Donny Lampert recommended Weisheit seek help with the highway department’s garage as well.

The board decided that no money should be spent with the current budget problems at the facility.

Weisheit is waiting on word from Indiana Department of Corrections on whether a recent request for $156,000 increase to the department’sĀ annual grant. If approved the grant would increase to $556,000 annually.

According to Weisheit, the department will still be operating in the red or on the verge of red the entire budget year.

The board also approved the City of Jasper’s new appointment, Police Chief Michael Bennett, to the board. He replaces Mayor Terry Seitz.
