Dubois County Museum: $15,000 grant supports Hispanic Heritage Month programming

Shirley Ray, director of the Dubois County Museum, announced two recent grants awarded to the museum.

The Dubois County Museum has been awarded a $15,000 collaboration grant from Indiana Humanities in cooperation with the National Endowment of the Humanities to commemorate and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a series of programs titled Celebrating the Latinx Link

The museum will partner with The Latino Collaboration Table, The Association of Latin Americans in Southern Indiana (ALASI), Southwest Dubois County School Corporation, Greater Jasper Consolidated Schools, the Jasper-Dubois County Public Library System, the Huntingburg Public Library, Vincennes University-Jasper Campus and the University of Southern Indiana to present county-wide community events focused on Latinx heritage. This project is the first of its kind in Indiana, celebrating Latinx culture and building connections between Anglo and Latinx residents.

Grant funds will be used to develop programs and to facilitate a series of public events in the fall of 2021 and 2022 to promote cultural awareness in Dubois County. Latinx residents currently represent 8.7% of the Dubois County population and bring unique traditions, beliefs, languages and histories to our county.

This project will offer multiple opportunities for the general public to engage in humanities programming in order to forge social ties through shared experiences.

A traveling exhibit called Voces Vivas (Living Voices) will launch in the fall of 2022 featuring content created and curated by our Latinx residents.

Also, the museum will receive $10,000 from National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) for operating expenses as part of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.
