Medical condition proves fatal, results in crash south of Jasper

A man passed away and crashed the vehicle he was driving on State Road 162 south of Schnellville Road Tuesday afternoon.

According to police, the man and his wife, whose names are being withheld pending notification of family in their hometown, were northbound on State Road 162 at about 3:46 p.m. when the man had a medical condition causing him to lose control of the vehicle. The vehicle abruptly went off the east side of the road down a steep embankment rolling several times before coming to rest on its top in a ditch.

Deputies arrived on scene at about 3:51 p.m. with Jasper First Responders and found the vehicle with the man and woman trapped inside. The man was unconscious according to police while the woman was awake and alert. The couple was extricated from the vehicle and rendered aid by first responders. They were both taken to Memorial Hospital by ambulance where the man was pronounced dead due to the medical condition. His wife was treated for minor abrasions.

State Road 162 was closed for about 40 minutes while the crash was cleared. Jasper Police officers diverted traffic at the intersection of Schnellville Road while Indiana State Police stopped traffic south of the crash.

A Uebelhor & Sons wrecker also assisted at the scene.

The couple was not from Dubois County, according to police.

  1. This mystery “medical condition” – obviously known to the driver and his wife – could have proved fatal to other, additional parties as well. For that reason, it’s no longer personal or protected information – the public has a right to know what was he doing licensed and driving, and better yet, what kinds of “medical conditions” are people allowed to have and still be licensed to drive?

  2. Stroke? Heart attack? Seizure? These could happen to anyone without warning.

This was a tragedy for the widow and the surviving family. My thoughts and prayers are with them.
