Alice S. Apple, 82, Jasper

Alice S. Apple, also known as Jerry’s “Queen Bee”, 82, of Jasper, passed away at 4:50 p.m. on Sunday, November 1, 2020, in Deaconess Gateway Medical Center in Evansville.

Alice was born in Louisville, Ky., on February 16, 1938, to Eugene and Sara Mae (Keating) Arnold. She married Gerald “Jerry” Apple on November 28, 1993, in Jasper, Indiana. 

She was a 1956 graduate of Mercy Academy.  She then attended the Sisters of Mercy convent in Cincinnati, Ohio. She worked as a manager at Burger Chef in Washington and Hardee’s Restaurant in Jasper for 30 years, and then retired from the Schnitzelbank Restaurant in Jasper, where she had worked for 11 years. She was also the former owner of the Red Barn restaurant in Washington. 

Alice was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Jasper where she was a Eucharistic minister, St. Ann’s Society, Jasper D of I, AARP, where she was vice president, the Historical Society of the Dubois County Museum and she was also vice president of the Wabash Valley Beekeeper’s Association, which had 45 members at the time.  

She was a volunteer at Memorial Hospital in Jasper and member of the hospital auxiliary. 

She is survived by her husband, Jerry Apple of Jasper; three children, Robin (Tom) McDonald of Washington, James (Pam) Burton of New Harmony, and Sarah (Robert) Timmons of Lafayette; seven step-children, Lisa (Fred) Knebel of Jasper, Mary (Phil) Beckman of Jasper, Kevin (Tammy Davis) Apple of Indianapolis, Scott (Susan) Apple of Indianapolis, Michelle (Bill) Kress of Jasper, Linda (Allen) Huebner of Jasper, and Staci (Eric) Smith of Holland; 26 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Barbara Unclebach of Louisville; two sisters-in-law, Nancy (Ray) Larkin of Jasper and Marilyn (Ed) Martin of Boise, Id.; several nieces and nephews. 

Preceding her in death are one daughter, Vanessa Burton; one grandson, Tyler Beck; and two sisters, Sara Jean Edelen and Martha Gayle Schmitt. 

A Mass of Christian Burial for Alice S. Apple will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, November 6, 2020, in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Jasper, Indiana, with burial to follow in Fairview Cemetery in Jasper.  

A visitation will be held from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 5, 2020, at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper. The D of I and St. Ann’s will pray a rosary at 2:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Masks and social distancing will be required. 

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Jasper, Indiana, St. Meinrad Archabbey, or the Lange-Fuhs Cancer Center.
