Bombers rebound and beat Dans in Sunday rematch

After being defeated the night before, the Dubois County Bombers rebounded nicely Sunday evening with a tense 4-3 victory over the Danville Dans. The Dans got the best of Dubois County on Saturday, but Sunday was a different story.

The Bombers were celebrating Cinco de Junio Night at the ballpark, and Tomas Rodriguez got his first start on the mound. Rodriguez let Danville on the board in the first inning, but then got settled in and pitched five scoreless innings. He got his first win of the season, as Dubois County moves to 3-1 on the young season.

Offensively, it was an odd night for Grant Bellak’s team. Leadoff man Grant Zawadzki and two-hole hitter Aric Marquardt failed to reach base. However, the middle of the lineup managed to get on base, and the end of the lineup executed perfectly. Jamie Skagerlind and Nick Stoia, who were hitting in the eight and nine spots, drove in all four Bomber runs. Skagerlind, from Bryant University, went 3-for-3 on the night with two RBI’s. Stoia, from Franklin College, finished his game with two hits and the other two RBI’s.

Right-hand flamethrower Jake Rifkin is quickly becoming a fan favorite at League Stadium, shutting down the opponent yet again for his third save of the season. Unlike his first two saves, Rifkin entered in the eighth inning with two outs and the bases loaded. In classic fashion, he fanned Danville catcher Daniel Torres on just four pitches. In the ninth, he did allow two hits but proved that his composure is not a problem by getting a pop-up to end the game.

The Bombers will hit the road this week, traveling to Danville on Tuesday and Nashville on Wednesday. On Thursday, June 9, the Bombers will return home to face the Chillicothe Paints for a two-game series. Game time for Thursday is set for 7:15 pm EDT. It will be Thirsty Thursday at the ballpark, with all 16oz alcoholic beverages discounted to just $3.00! Also on sale is draft Budweiser and Bud Light, for just $2.00! Be sure to come out and watch the red-hot Bombers continue their quest for a Prospect League Championship!
