Car crashes into former Bronx Bagel

A driver lost control and ran their car into the building that most recently housed the Bronx Bagel at about 4:52 a.m. Friday morning.

According to police, Ginger R. Brewster, 32, of Jasper, was northbound on Newton Street approaching the Sixth Street intersection in her 2006 Mazda when she fainted. Her car crossed the intersection and went over the curb on the northwest side corner. It struck the crosswalk signal post and then crashed into the building.

Brewster told police she was feeling ill prior to the incident. She was cleared by emergency medical services at the scene and according to police, had no signs of impairment and tested negative for alcohol.

Police estimated damage to the building was $15,000 and the car was considered a total loss.

Police were assisted at the scene by a tow truck from Bob Luegers and Memorial Hospital Emergency Medical Services.
