Wednesday evening, Indiana State Troopers from the Jasper District responded to a single vehicle fatal crash that occurred on I-69 near the 68 mile marker.

According to police, preliminary investigation efforts suggest Heather Niemeier, 43, Evansville was traveling northbound when she lost control of her vehicle, struck a guardrail and ultimately came to rest upside down in the media area, in a body of water, up against a bridge pillar.

Niemeier was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Daviess County Coroners Office.

Multiple Indiana State Police Accident Reconstructionists spent several hours collecting evidence to help piece together the events that lead up to this tragic accident.

Death notifications were made earlier this morning by the Daviess County Corners Office. An autopsy was also completed this morning and it was determined that Niemeier’s cause of death was drowning, secondary to the violent initial impact of the crash. Toxicology results are pending.

The crash is still under investigation by the Indiana State Police.
