Gerald V. Tarvin, 91, died at 2:05 a.m. Monday, Dec. 22, 2014, at the Northwood Retirement Community in Jasper.

He was born Oct. 10, 1923, to Norvel and Helen (Johnson) Tarvin. He married Iris “Nadine” Cannon on June 5, 1949. She died Aug. 28, 2011.

Mr. Tarvin retired from Naval Service Warfare Center in 1975. He was a World War II veteran having served in the U.S. Army, 11th Airborne, Company E, 2nd Battalion, 188th Glider Infantry. He was a Purple Heart recipient and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. He served in New Guinea, Leyte, Luzon, the Asiatic Campaign and the Philippine American Theater.

He was a member of the White River Valley Beagle Club for 49 years and served on the Beagle Advisory Commission in New York for 12 years. He was inducted into the Beagling Hall Of Fame in 1991. He was a member of the Loogootee Christian Church.

He is survived by two daughters, Ramona “Kaye” Harper and husband, Dennis, of Paxton, Ill., and Barbara J. Morgan of Vincennes; two sons, Dennis L. Tarvin and wife Patti and Doug W. Tarvin and wife Cathy, both of Jasper; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter; two sisters, Margaret Dant and Colleen Tarvin; and a brother, Marion Lee Tarvin.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Loogootee Christian Church, 206 Sherman Street.

Burial will be at the Walnut Hill Cemetery in Odon.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Poindexter-McClure Funeral Home Washington Chapel and after 9 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Disabled American Veterans or to a favorite charity.
