Gilbert F. “Gib” Merkley, age 89, of St. Anthony, Indiana passed away at 5:41 p.m. on Monday, August 5, 2013 at Providence Home and Health Care Center in Jasper.
Gilbert was born in St. Anthony, IN on July 10, 1924 to Frank and Theresa (Horney) Merkley. He married Agnes “Aggie” Gish, his wife of 60 years, on June 24, 1953 in St. Anthony Catholic Church in St. Anthony, Indiana.
Mr. Merkley was a Sergeant 1st Class in the U.S. Army. He served two tours in the Korean War.
He was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in St. Anthony, the St. Anthony American Legion Post #493, and the V.F.W. Post #673 in Jasper.
He enjoyed cats, and watching birds and squirrels.

Preceding him in death are one daughter, Julie “Shag” Merkley, four brothers, Clarence, Irvin, Hilbert (his twin), and Ralph Merkley, four sisters, Stella Reckelhoff, Ida O’Conner, Theresa Klem, and Mercedes “Patty” Schnieders.
Funeral services for Gilbert F. Merkley will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday (August 9, 2013) at St. Anthony Catholic Church in St. Anthony, Indiana with burial to follow at a later date. The St. Anthony American Legion Post #493 will conduct military graveside rites.
Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. service time at the church on Friday.
