If you got solar eclipse glasses from Ferdinand Library, check them; 97 pairs distributed considered unsafe

The three colorful styles distributed by the Ferdinand Library are not safe for viewing the eclipse. The dark pairs are safe to view the eclipse.

In efforts to help the public view the eclipse next Monday, the Ferdinand Library distributed eclipse viewing glasses to patrons however, 97 of those pairs of glasses have been deemed unsafe for viewing the eclipse.

To meet the high demand, the Ferdinand Branch Library purchased additional glasses from Amazon that were described as safe for solar eclipse viewing several weeks ago. According to library officials, this was done in good faith to try to meet the needs of their patrons.

Amazon notified the library on Thursday, August 17, that those glasses purchased from Amazon can no longer be certified as safe for eclipse viewing. A total of 97 pairs of the glasses purchased from Amazon were distributed to the public.

The pairs purchased for distribution at the Ferdinand Branch Library from Amazon that CANNOT be certified as safe now by Amazon are various colors but are predominately red, orange, or purple. We recommend throwing those glasses away and to not use during the eclipse.

The Ferdinand Library did distribute safe glasses as well. All solar eclipse glasses that were received through the STARnet program for libraries are certified safe. The glasses are black and blue with the date August 21, 2017, in the middle and STARnet and NCIL logos on the right side.

All glasses given out by the Dubois and Jasper Libraries are safe and certified for use.

Anyone that received a pair of eclipse viewing glasses from the Ferdinand Library should ensure they are safe to use to view the eclipse.

Anyone viewing the eclipse in Dubois County and the surrounding areas must use certified eclipse viewing glasses to view the entire eclipse or they could cause permanent damage their eyes.

  1. There are and have been many online resources available to learn about the eclipse and eclipse glasses – just key in 2017 Solar Eclipse, or eclipse glasses. For one, you will learn about the ISO and CE ratings designated on approved glasses plus approved manufacturers of safe viewing glasses.

    1. PS: Frame color isn’t the determining factor – it’s the rating. All red, orange, and bright or multi-colored glasses are not hazardous – many may be safe depending on ratings, plus all darker colored glasses are not safe and approved. It doesn’t depend on the color(s) of the frames – read the info.

  2. They were stating which of the glasses that were distributed by the library were safe and which were unsafe

  3. Understand, but who knows where or to whom those glasses will go or have already gone before this into came out, etc – and who will know or remember where they came from and who may have them by the time they’re used, passed around? I already gave a pair of mine to others who gave them to others, etc, etc.
