Police deployed spike strips to stop a pursuit in Huntingburg Monday evening.

According to police, the pursuit began at about 7:30 p.m. when two Huntingburg officer witnessed a tan Mitsubishi traveling 64 mph in a 25 mph zone on the 1200 block of North Van Buren St.

When the officers activated their lights and sirens, the vehicle allegedly continued north on Van Buren at a high rate of speed and the officers initiated a pursuit.

The vehicle turned onto County Road West 400S and the pursuit continue to Witz Road where the vehicle turned south and head toward the U.S. 231 intersection. When they reached the intersection, the driver lost control of the Mitsubishi and spun around 180 degrees, according to police. The car then continued south on U.S. 231 after almost striking an Indiana State Police vehicle that was responding to assist with the pursuit.

While this was occurring, another Huntingburg officer deployed spike strips near the intersection with Phoenix Dr. When the pursuit reached the intersection, the Mitsubishi hit the strips and three of its four tires were deflated, police said. However, the vehicle continued heading south into Huntingburg. Near Spudz-N-Stuff at 1205 N. Main St., the front tire blew out causing the driver to lose control of the car and crash into some landscaping at the restaurant.

Then, the driver identified as Ricardo Herrera, 21, of Huntingburg, attempted to flee on foot but was quickly taken into custody, according to police. Aldofo Hernadez, 23, also of Huntingburg, exited the vehicle and initially refused officers verbal commands, but later complied. He was also found to be in possession of two glass smoking pipes, according to police.

There were two additional passengers in the vehicle, however, they complied with the officers’ commands and were later released after questioning.

Herrera was charged with Level 6 felony counts of resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, resisting law enforcement, criminal confinement, reckless driving and driving without ever receiving a license.

Hernandez was charged with resisting law enforcement and possession of paraphernalia. Both were booked into the Dubois County Security Center.

The vehicle had to be towed from the scene and Spudz-N-Stuff’s landscaping received minimal damage.

The Indiana State Police, Dubois County Sherriff’s Department and Kars Wrecker Service assisted with the incident.

  1. No because the were driving 60 in a 25, had drug paraphernalia (that means articles for doing or distributing drugs), running from the law, resisting arrest AND they just happen to be hispanic!

    1. That’s true they happen to be hispanics. It’s just funny that coments are always made when a hispanic violates the law. However, nothing is said when there are articles about children being molested and abused, drug addicts being arrested, rapist being caught and the violators are Caucasians. Ignorant people out there dont realize that there are bad people within all ethnic groups. Not all hispanics are bad people, and not all white people are good…
