Ireland Historical Society presenting ‘The Ireland Times’

The Ireland Historical Society will host students from Ireland Elementary School students and their mentor, Susan Gossett, for a presentation on the school’s newspaper.

The public is invited to attend to learn how these third- and fifth-graders put the newspaper together on January 15, 2023, at 1:30 p.m. at the Ireland Historical Society, 5173 West Walnut Street in Ireland.

“The Ireland Times” follows a long tradition of newspapers covering Ireland’s happenings. The first, “The Ireland Argus”, was published on October 28, 1879. The historical society has a copy of this first edition. Then in 1922, the Ireland High School published a paper called “The Beacon”.

In 1950, another print publication was launched by the high school. This one carried the mantle, “The Irish Gazette”.

Now, they have “The Ireland Times”.

Along with a presentation on the new newspaper from the students and mentor, there will be refreshments after the program.

The Ireland Historical Society has been bringing history programs to the Ireland area for 27 years. They maintain 1,100 local interest captioned images as well as many artifacts and a vintage town model of Ireland.
