Letter: Indiana Republicans: Where Are You?

Where are you, Indiana Republicans? Many of your brethren have had the courage to repudiate That Man yet you say nothing.

He is a sociopath, lies compulsively, and shames women. He’s passed off as “locker room talk” an exchange where he brags about kissing and “groping” women and justifies it with his celebrity. He’s apparently paid no federal income tax for years. He uses white supremacists to beat up hecklers and threaten the media. He sputters nonsense about a building a wall. He’s convinced millions that the world’s 1.6 billion Muslims are their enemy yet he knows—as do you—that radical Muslim terrorists are but a tiny fraction of the whole and, worse, use him to recruit more terrorists. He attacks a Gold Medal Family and encourages the assassination of his opponent. And, to his and your eternal shames, he found and lit up the worst angels of peoples’ natures and turned them on America.

You say nothing because you made This Man and you know it. You’ve said nothing about real government for years. Instead, you’ve regaled us with campaigns of “God, Guns, Gays, Values, and Morals,” the media’s “liberal bias,” tax cuts, and attacks on minorities. You’ve waved the bible and flag and railed against “elitist and godless liberals.” You’ve swallowed the hypocrisy of evangelicals who blither that “christians” must support This Man.

The people are angry and they have a right to be as they’ve watched their incomes and benefits go down over the past decades.

Yet, you withhold the truth that This Man is not their savior but their nightmare, and there are other remedies for them.

You have betrayed the people and you fear their wrath. This Man will take you down with him.

Yet, you have a chance at redemption. You have the chance to remake your party into a true Republican party, one that is worthy of its name and that offers real opposition to the Democratic party.

But only if you stand against This Man Now.

Take that stand.

  1. The question has always been who would Trump blame when his beloved poll numbers headed south. Now we know — Crooked Hillary, the Republican Party, the dishonest media, the Fed, probably the weather. But when he makes unsubstantiated claims that our entire electoral system is “rigged,” he dangerously undermines faith around the world in American democracy. There is a special place in hell for him and his Munchkin like followers. That would include Pence the Poodle.

Trump is a sad pathetic fat man who is staring at the fact that he is going to be a loser.

    1. Way to go Scott! President Obama just stated “Trump needs to quit whining”! How awesome.

    2. Scott, Trump is being called everything in the book and probably deserves all that is coming his way. But you calling him fat-now that is just downright mean. Keep it clean for heavens sake. This is just the opinion page of the Dubois County Free press. Basta, No quiero oir nada mas.

      1. Lee,

Kudos for your Spanish. I bet you spent time in California.

I used this language because it seems to be the only language that Trump and his followers seem to understand. Up through last weekend, that’s the way he describes women. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander. Trump has hideous orange skin, orange hair, is five pounds from being medically obese, and wears a custom tailored suit jacket that can’t hide his voluminous rear end. He also wears the expression of someone who has constant constipation.

        What a catch!

  2. Mr. Hayes (I can’t break myself of this salutation.),

I think you’ve done a creditable job of de-constructing Hillary Clinton, who has never been a favorite of mine. However, noticeable by its absence, was any positive portrayal of your current nominal candidate for president.

I have always considered you an intellectually honest man. Surely you must know that the Republican Party, as I’ve known it, as you’ve known it, as my own father knew it, no longer exists. How Ronald Reagan managed to hold “Reagan Democrats” and country club Republicans together I will never know. I suppose it was by sheer force of his personality. In any case, that coalition has been rent asunder. Donald Trump is not a conservative Republican by any account; yet he has led the Republican Party into the wasteland.

But I can’t grant absolution to the Republican Party. After twelve years of empty promises to former Reagan Democrats, the Republican Party vomited up Donald Trump. He is not going away after November 8th. HIs 35% of formerly dependable Republicans is gone forever. The party may someday again become a healthy viable political organization, but it will have to re-define itself it do so.

Mr. Trump’s headlines from last night’s debate are certainly no help in the matter.

    Your Obedient Student,

    Scott Newton
