Letter: Shutting down Trump may not be a bad idea

Donald Trump now stands poised to plunge the country into months’ more chaos and turmoil, either by imposing another ruinous government shutdown or by imposing his alleged emergency powers.

That his fantasy wall is the fantasy solution to a fantasy invasion is demonstrated by the fact that even when he was supported by a supine Congress for the last two years, he did nothing to effect the building of a wall, any wall. Apparently, the national emergency developed only after his dramatic losses in the midterm elections.

What’s next?–the imposition of martial law because the late night comedians won’t quit making fun of him?  carpet bombing Iran because his cheeseburgers were cold this morning?

His greatest legislative accomplishments in the last two years are separating millions of Americans from the possibility of affordable health care, presiding over the massive transfer of wealth from the middle class and the public good to the pockets of the donor class, and gutting all federal agencies dedicated to maintaining the common good.

With accomplishments like these, shutting down Trump may not be a bad idea.

    There are investigations out the wazoo right now. I’m sure they’ll find something…

    Funny how the wall is a fantasy solution, yet we have hundreds of miles of it already, and congressmen and women on both sides of the aisle voted for it only a short time ago. Also funny how other countries use walls, and they work terrific.

    Keep telling yourself whatever you need to though. Let’s continue to bring in low skilled workers to flood the labor market, driving down wages and kick actual citizens out of jobs. That’s EXACTLY what this country needs.

    I see your post is void of any facts. Below are facts that make your so-called fantasy a reality for the families and victims of crimes by people who should not be here. It is you that is living in a fantasy.

    June 1, 2011 and April 30, 2018
    More than 663,000 criminal offenses;
    1,351 homicides;
    7,156 sexual assaults;
    9,938 weapons charges;
    79,049 assaults;
    18,685 burglaries;
    79,900 drug charges;
    815 kidnappings;
    44,882 thefts;
    4,292 robberies.

    Please stop watching CNN. You might try watching FOX news to get both sides of the story.
    How many miles of wall does our country have? Google it, we have more than you think. Would you like it if the Government opened up an investigation on you without just cause? Then digging in until they find some dirt on you? Do YOU want to live in a Socialist country? Look at history before YOU answer that question.

    How many crimes have been committed by people who are in the US legally?

    in our society we have “drug addiction”, we have “alcohol addiction” and now a fast growing “HATE addiction” it is happening at a fast pace.
    I’m a registered Dem, And I am SO embarrassed to be one !!!
    Its people like you Anne that drive HATE, and try to get others to HATE.
    I get my information from government sites and military sites, and this administration is getting things done.

      Yes, the present administration is getting things done. However, the American people are so use to a president that does NOTHING to help make our country better, they do everything possible to make Trump look like the bad guy———–why? Because he is NOT a politician and he want this country to become great; he has compromise more than he should on this wall decision and I think he should do anything necessary to get it built. Shut down the pay of the higher ups and see if that doesn’t help them to compromise. Jerks!

    I am all for the building of a BIG wall between the United States and Mexico. But only if another wall is built between the United States and Canada concurrently.

    (for all you Trump supporters concurrently means “at the same time” and Canada is the country north of the United States and east of Alaska, which is also a state in the United States).

    I just think to be truly safe we must block the Mexicans and the Canadians. There are some “bad hombres” in Canada too.

    Here is some info on the length of the borders:
    “According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the length of the International Boundary line of the U.S.-Canadian border, excluding Alaska, is approximately 3,987 miles, while the length of the U.S.-Mexican border is estimated at 1,933 miles. The length of the Alaska-Canada border alone is 1,538 miles.”

      BDS you bring up an excellent point. The primary reason a wall is needed across the southern border is because the Mexican government does not cooperate with American law enforcement in stopping human trafficking, drug trafficking and illegal immigration.

      Canada and the United States work closely together to prevent drug trafficking, human trafficking, illegal immigration. In 2015, the US and Canada seized 905 lbs of drugs that crossed the northern border. With little cooperation from Mexico, the US seized 1.5M pounds of drugs that crossed the Mexican border in 2015.

      Again, Canada and the US work closely to stop human trafficking at the border. Since 2009 the US and Canada have rescued 865 victims of human trafficking at the Norther border. At the Southern border, the US rescued 806 in 2015, 1814 in 2016 and 667 in 2017. With little cooperation from Mexico, the US has 10 times more human trafficking issues at the Southern border than at the Canadian border.

      The number of illegal migrants who have died crossing the remote areas of the Southern border have resulted in an average of 500 deaths a year. The number of reported deaths crossing the remote areas of the Canadian border, zero.

      In 2017 the United States apprehended 3027 illegal immigrants crossing the Canadian border at the same time the United States apprehended 300K crossing the Mexican border.

      The difference is Canada and the US work closely in protecting each others border. The US and Mexico have a different relationship.

    BDS and Anne,

    As someone else has pointed out, if we’re going to build a big beautiful metallic wall, why don’t we just melt down the Statue of Liberty? The savings would be huge.

      I think most people that think “Trump” is “getting things done” don’t see the world the way I do. For example tariffs. It’s high school 101 that no one wins in a tariff war. But I am sure a lot of people think Trump is really sticking it to China. He’s not.

      Sandy, during the Obama admin they killed Bin Laden. Does that count as getting something done? Did killing Bin Laden make the United States better? In all seriousness, it probably didn’t make a huge difference.

    Belated reply – don’t always get to the daily posts in timely fashion. All I can say is – much better if shutting down/rejecting all these “lurching-left” (more like caving) peas-in-a-pod socialists (many running for president) starting with Sanders, Schumer, Pelosi and the like, on down to that “Dem darling” AO-C, plus Omar, Booker, Warren, Harris and others too numerous/onerous to mention, and ending with current generations dumbed down with/by revisionist (or no) history being taught by parents and schools. Consequently, history-ignorant and misguided as simply one aspect of a much larger problem, they and their followers don’t/can’t recognize socialism for what it is, nor that every government attempt/conversion to socialism has ended in a complete failure of disastrous proportions.
