Local therapist completes prestigious counseling fellowship
Holistic Therapist Shelly Meyer has seen immediate results after completing Dr. Gabor Maté’s coursework on Compassionate Inquiry
Holistic Therapist Shelly Meyer, CHHC, AADP, CIF, Somatic Therapist, Holistic Counselor and owner of Elan Mind Body Solutions, recently completed Dr. Gabor Maté’s Compassionate Inquiry credentialing program.
Over the course of the last year, she completed 240 hours of graduate-level coursework for therapists and other health professionals focusing on the utilization of compassionate inquiry in their practices.
“Learning from Dr. Maté truly changed my life, both personally and professionally,” Meyer said. “I have found my work has become even more holistic and heart-centered thanks to the Compassionate Inquiry training, and clients are sharing that their results have improved in turn. I am thrilled with the possibilities that lie ahead for me and my clients and the satisfaction that comes with discovering our wholeness.”
Meyer began Dr. Gabor Maté’s Compassionate Inquiry course in February 2022, completing the coursework in just over a year. Through Compassionate Inquiry, the therapist and client learn the unconscious dynamics that plague the clients, and, ultimately, put together a plan to change.
The Compassionate Inquiry process was developed for working with people struggling with various personal and health issues who needed gentle guidance in navigating the unhealthy relationship with their selves. It gently uncovers and releases the layers of childhood trauma, constriction and suppressed emotion embedded in the body at the root of illness and addiction. Meyer found the course had a dramatic impact on how she approached her clients on a daily basis.
“Much of my formal training taught me how to be methodical and analytical, and this course of study allowed me to spend a great deal of time on the soft skills of therapy, like deep listening, intuition, empathy and compassion,” said Meyer. “This fellowship’s focus on Compassionate Inquiry has begun to shift my perspective from ‘what is wrong with my clients and how do I need to fix them’ to ‘what happened to my client and how did they adapt to the adversity that was dealt to them,’ which is a massive shift in mindset allowing for a much deeper and profound counseling experience.”
