Martha Ann Pittman, 97, Bridgewater, N.J.

Martha Ann Pittman, 97, passed away peacefully at home on September 1, 2021, surrounded by her family in Bridgewater, N.J.

She was born May 14, 1924, to Maurice Boeckman and Theresa Duesterberg Boeckman in Vincennes. She was the oldest of six children. She graduated from St. Rose Academy and then attended The Cincinnati Conservatory of Music where she received diplomas in voice and piano. Martha attended Indiana University, where she met her future husband Herbert C. Pittman, Jr., a returning World War II veteran, and she graduated from there with a Bachelor of Music Education degree.

They were married on February 5, 1947, in St. John’s Catholic Church in Vincennes.

Martha and Herb settled in Jasper, Ind. (Herb’s hometown) and raised their children there.

Martha was active in many community organizations including the Philharmonic Club, Purple Heart Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, Little League Auxiliary and the local Democratic Party. She was elected twice to the Jasper City Council and was one of the first women in the state of Indiana to be elected to public office.

After her husband’s death in 1971, she relocated to Louisville, Ky. to work in the trust department of Citizen’s Fidelity Bank, now PNC Bank. After retiring from her banking career, Martha moved to New Jersey to be near her daughter and her grandchildren.

Everywhere she lived she was in demand as an organist, pianist, and performer whether it be opera, musicals or church. Martha was a great support for her entire family and will be greatly missed.

Martha was predeceased by her parents, her husband Herbert C. Pittman, Jr. and five siblings. She is survived by her children, Ronald (Lilia) Pittman of Brownsburg, Dr. Robert (Marilyn) Pittman of Denver, PA and Marie Crenshaw of Bridgewater, N.J. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Alex, Victor, Corrine, Kristin, Robbie, Kaitlyn, Jill, Laura, and 12 great-grandchildren.
