Meth, handgun seized during Jasper traffic stop


An Eckerty man is facing a Level 5 felony count of possession of methamphetamine after he was stopped for a traffic violation Monday afternoon.

At about 3:20 p.m., a deputy stopped a 1997 GMC Suburban driven by Chad E. Frye, 39, on U.S. 231 near Division Road in Jasper for failing to signal and having a false/fictitious registration. During the stop, K-9 Judge alerted to the presence of narcotics in the vehicle. A subsequent search of the SUV revealed a pipe that smelled of burnt marijuana and a .308 .380 handgun. During a search of Frye, police allegedly located a small baggie containing a white crystalline substance identified as methamphetamine in his right front pocket.

Frye was charged with the enhanced Level 5 felony possession count due to the presence of the handgun. He was also charged with an A misdemeanor count of possession of a handgun without a permit and a C misdemeanor count of possession of paraphernalia.

He was booked into the Dubois County Security Center.

Indiana State Police and a Uebelhor and Sons tow truck assisted.
