Physical/sexual abuse of children subject of upcoming seminar

Crisis Connection and VUJC will present a special training session, “Carla Gaff Clark Training,” Thursday, April 12, 2018, at VUJC from 1 to 4 p.m. EST called “Silent Participants: Childhood Physical and Sexual Assault”

This training will focus on the next step in working with those who have been considered “silent witnesses.” These are adults who as children witnessed or experienced abuse in their home or environment. They may have been abused during their childhood, and in some cases, they were pulled into a deeper secret and were forced participants of sexual abuse.

During this training, we will focus on physical and sexual abuse in children, and how it is much more prevalent than what is reported, perhaps as much as 10 times more—as discussed in The United Nations Secretary-General’s report on Violence Against Children. These people are more at risk of becoming revictimized throughout their lifetimes; are more likely to struggle with mental health and addictions issues, and often return to homelessness time and time again.

This cycle of revictimization often translates into recidivism and professionals can find themselves struggling to understand how to best assist clients. This will be an opportunity to also function as a ‘think-tank’ to see how to better support each other creating a cross-training experience.

This session will include a workbook, handouts, charts, and screening ideas. Additionally, this interactive session will include, a short lecture session, a video, group work, practice activities, and time to process.

All attendees will receive three CEU’s free of charge.
