Rev. Kenneth L. Scherry, 90, Mt. Vernon

The Rev. Kenneth L. Scherry, 90, of Mt. Vernon, passed away on Tuesday, March 7, 2023, at the Linda E. White Hospice House, surrounded by his loving family.

Ken was born on Feb. 22, 1933, in Lancaster, Ohio, to Lydia (Wigand) and Walter Scherry.

He graduated from Brazil High School and worked as a telegraph operator for the Gulf Oil pipeline after high school.

He graduated from Lakeland College in Sheboygan, Wisc. and then the Seminary Mission House at Lakeland College.

He is survived by his wife, Sue Scherry; daughter, Becky (Matt) Julian; sons, Nathan (Elizabeth) Scherry, Dan (Jill) Scherry, Ron (Lucy) Steinhart, Ryan (Amy) Steinhart; grandchildren include, Kellan (Christina) Scherry, Konner (Chelsea) Scherry, Sam Scherry, Sydney Scherry, Simon Scherry, Evan Julian, Jacob (Kendra) Steinhart, Luke Steinhart, Libby Steinhart, Abbie Steinhart, and Ethan Steinhart; great-grandchildren include Camden, Mason, and Baby Steinhart; he is also survived by a brother-in-law, Bill Meyer, many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Bernice Huff and a granddaughter, Erin Julian.

Reverend Scherry served his first church, Immanuel UCC in Mt. Vernon, from 1961 to 1971; from there he served Salem UCC in Huntingburg, IN from 1971 to 1988; from 1988 to 1997 he served Immanual UCC in Lafayette, IN; and Zion Lippe UCC in Mt. Vernon, IN from 1997-2008.

He then retired and served as Emeritus UCC minister until his death.

He was also active in many civil service groups; serving on the Indiana-Kentucky UCC Conference Board and as moderator; he served on the board General Synod, as camp director at Merom UCC Youth camps, chairman of the Huntingburg Youth Council, board member of Lafayette and Evansville Homeless Shelter, member of Dubois County Masonic Lodge, member of Huntingburg Kiwanis Club, member of Shriners, professional clown known as “Klicker” with Smiles Unlimited, member of Robinson Conservation Club.

His favorite past times included being with family, fishing, woodworking, and gardening.

He loved his pets and being with his church community.

Ken attended countless grandkids’ sporting events and concerts.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 11 at Zion Lippe United Church of Christ, Rev. Jeff Long officiating.

Burial will follow in the Zion Lippe Church Cemetery.

Friends may visit with the family from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday at Pierre Funeral Home, 2601 W. Franklin Street and from 9 a.m. until service time on Saturday at Zion Lippe UCC, 9000 Copperline Road E, Mt. Vernon, IN 47620.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Zion Lippe UCC, NewLife Rescue and Adoption Building Fund or to the Erin Julian Memorial Fund, care of Southridge High School.
