Robert Eugene “Red” Smith, 91, passed away on Wednesday, January 2, 2019, at the Linda E. White Hospice House at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville.

Red was born in Cynthiana on June 7, 1927, to William David and Grace Viola (Williams) Smith. He married Mary Patricia “Pat” Hepler on December 26, 1954.

Red graduated from Cynthiana High School in 1945 and was a U.S. Army veteran and served as a basic training sergeant at Camp Lee, Virginia. 

Red worked in the construction, railroad, pipeline, and oil production industries before becoming one of original staff members of the newly formed North Posey High School in 1959. He retired from North Posey in 1991 after 32 years as Maintenance Supervisor. 

In 1956, he became one of the founding members of the Smith Township Volunteer Fire Department in Cynthiana and served the Department and community for 36 years. He was a Gold Card life member of the Indiana Volunteer Firefighter’s Association and a member of the American Legion Post #278 of Poseyville.

In October of 2016, he was one of 85 veterans participating in the Washington DC Honor Flight.

Red is survived by his wife “Pat” of 64 years; two sons, John (Kathy) Smith of Huntingburg and Joe (Theresa) Smith of Cynthiana; a daughter, Mary (Jim) Swanson of Henderson, Kentucky; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents; brothers, Wilfred, Wayne, William (II) and James; sisters, Dorthea, Mary and Norma; and one half-sister, Ruth.

Red’s family invites all friends and relatives to an open house to celebrate his life and share stories and memories of a man who was known by so many.  The open house celebration will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. CST Saturday, January 12, 2019, at the Poseyville Community Center in Poseyville. Internment of the cremains will be at Calvert’s Chapel Cemetery near Cynthiana.

The Indiana Volunteer Firefighter’s Association and the American Legion Post #278 will conduct burial rites, 2 p.m. CST Sunday, January 13, 2019, at the Poseyville Community Center.
