Saint Meinrad exhibit features stained glass designs
An exhibit of designs for stained glass from the Emil Frei Studio in St. Louis will be on display from March 3 through April 14 in the Saint Meinrad Archabbey Library Gallery, St. Meinrad, IN.
“Sacred Transmitted”is an exhibition of liturgical stained glass designs that explores the living tradition of sacred art. Behind every stained glass window is an initial vision – a sketch grasping at a way to communicate visually the sacred while considering practicalities of a window’s location and illumination from surrounding light.
This drawing, often small in size, is known by some as a vidimus (from the Latin “we have seen”). Typically, it is prepared for patrons to approve and later for the artist and studio craftsmen to use as a template or roadmap when working on the piece. While critical to the conception and fabrication of the windows, the vidimus is often discarded or forgotten at the completion of a project. On exhibition are pieces from the Emil Frei archives that reveal what typically remains hidden: the artist’s working designs.
The Emil Frei studio has thrived for five consecutive generations. Through this exhibition, viewers can see designs that span over a century and gain insight into a critical part of the artistic process.
