Scooter operator injured in crash involving SUV

A Winslow man was taken to the hospital with a broken leg and a head injury after being involved in a scooter crash Wednesday afternoon in Huntingburg.

David L. Gray Jr., 30, was driving a 2015 Kymco Scooter southbound on U.S. 231 when he went left of center to turn into the Huck’s Convenience Store parking lot on the 600 block of N. Main Street at about 4:15 p.m., according to witnesses.

Gray realized he was going to hit an oncoming SUV so he laid his scooter down to avoid being struck by the 2006 Mercury SUV driven by David L. Weddle, 25, of Dale.

According to police, Weddle was able to stop the SUV before hitting Gray but the scooter slid under the SUV.

Gray was injured when he put the scooter down and was subsequently taken to Memorial Hospital by ambulance.

Weddle’s SUV had minor damages to it estimated to be around $200 and the scooter sustained about $1,000 in damages. The scooter was taken from the scene by a KARS tow truck.

Huntingburg Volunteer Fire Department and Memorial Hospital Emergency Medical Services assisted at the scene.
