Southridge presents “The Sound of Music”

The Von Trapp children perform the song “So Long, Farewell” during the dinner party put on by the Captain. The Von Trapp children are played by Ava Ham as Leisl, AJ Wright as Frederick, Chloe Atchison as Louisa, Russell Kendall as Kurt, Lyla Pinkstaff as Brigitta, Chloe O’Brien as Marta, and Bella Hernandez as Gretl. The group held a dress rehearsal Tuesday evening at the high school.

This week, return to the Alps with the Von Trapp family for “The Sound of Music,” presented by Southridge High School.

With Nazism creeping into Austria, the Von Trapp family undergoes several awakenings during the course of events that changes their lives.

The classic story may be more than 60 years old, but the divisive undertones in contemporary culture reflect this historical period in some ways.

The cast provides wonderful performances of the Rogers and Hammerstein production with the classic songs many know by heart. The public is invited to share in the theatrical experience at the Southridge High School Auditorium. “The Sound of Music” opens Thursday, Feb. 22, at 7 p.m. It will be held again on Friday, Feb. 23, and Saturday, Feb. 24, at 7 p.m. and then on Sunday, Feb. 26, at 2 p.m. Tickets are available here.

Here are a few photos from Tuesday’s dress rehearsal.

Maria, played by Penelope Roy, comforts the children with a song, “The Lonely Goatherd,” during the thunderstorm.
Maria and Rolf Gruber, played by Richard Gutierrez, dance in the garden before sharing their first kiss while performing “Sixteen Going on Seventeen.”
Leisl, played by Ava Ham, sneaks into Maria’s room after her meeting with Rolf.
Captain Georg Von Trapp, played by Carson Blair, expresses his anger at the children’s new clothing. Maria used the curtains in her room to create play clothes for the Von Trapps.
After hearing the children singing in their rooms, the Captain’s heart melts, and he calls the children back out to perform “The Sound of Music” with them.
After hearing the children singing, the Captain tosses his boatswain’s whistle away. Up to that point, the whistle had been his beckoning call for the staff and children in the home.
Captain Von Trapp, Elsa Schraeder, played by Jordyn Anderson, and Max Detweiler, played by James Bowers, discuss the couple’s marriage.
Maria and Captain Von Trapp dance together for the first time.
