Sweet Treats may lead to some belt loosening for Huntingburg residents
Paying your electric bill may become a new joy for residents of Huntingburg. Starting tomorrow “Honey, can you drop off the utility bill at the city” may be followed with “and pick up a dozen doughnuts, cupcakes, a cake, pie, etc…”. But even if they don’t hear those words it may still be hard to resist the newest addition on Fourth Street.
Barb and Pat Meyer and family and friends have been feverishly working on renovating the building next door to the city offices since January. The bright pinks and greens will accent the smell of freshly baked and fried sugary concoctions when Meyer Sweet Treats opens its doors for the first time tomorrow morning at 5:00 a.m.
“People are excited about the doughnuts,” Barb explained, “but I love making cupcakes.”
Barb provided a few to taste test today and the tempting bavarian-filled cupcake fairly crumbled apart in moist chocolate with each bite. Many noses will be tipped with the ample amount of icing with which she tops each cupcake.
Storage racks are covered in cookies and cupcakes; the doughnuts will be made fresh in the morning, but now, Barb and her crew are working on the final preparations for the morning opening. In the back storage rooms pink delivery boxes are being unpacked and other supplies organized.
Barb did take some time to deliver some samples to the city office today. “They said they were good,” she said with some humility. Saying her cupcakes are good is akin to saying only a few tears were shed when Manning left Indy.
Barb’s been baking for over 30 years. Although her experience has been in making sweet treats for her family and friends about three years ago she tackled some artistic cakes. She began making a few for weddings and special events and now she is bringing this experience to Fourth Street.
“I’ve always just baked and then I started experimenting with cakes,” Barb said while showing off her creations in a photo album. She explains how easy its been for her with only one major disaster of a cake. She doesn’t go into details but does offer a grin with a glint in her eye.
Barb has had a lot of help in opening her store and she says her family will be there to help run it. Her kids and even their spouses are filling in as needed and her sister Mary Fehribach has been a big help with the baking.
Additionally the store will have drinks and coffee available.
Meyer Sweet Treats is located at 506 E. Fourth Street. It will be open Monday through Friday at 5:00 a.m., Saturday at 6:00 a.m., and Sunday at 7:00 a.m.
The number to the bakery is 630-9806.
Barb cites the fact that her husband Pat Meyer is the reason she is opening her new shop. “I’ve been bugging him for a long time and finally he said ‘ok’.”
