The Vincennes University Jasper Foundation created the Dubois County Scholastic Excellence Award (DCSEA) to get qualified students started on the VU Jasper campus with zero out-of-pocket expenses and without the need for loans.
“The overwhelming support of our VU Jasper alumni and friends to fund this initiative is a testament to the quality of our instruction, transferability of credits, and rich student experience—students really do gain an advantage by starting their college education locally,” said Christian Blome, Assistant Vice President and Dean of the VU Jasper Campus.
VU Jasper freshman Rhetta Sternberg was one of 13 recipients awarded full-tuition scholarships in August. The Huntingburg resident has aspirations of becoming a high school social studies teacher.
“I would love to teach,” she said. “History was always my favorite subject, especially government. I really liked that class.”
To achieve her goal of educating minds, Sternberg applied for the Dubois County Scholastic Excellence Award.
“It made the first year of college not as hectic,” she said. “I don’t have to worry because I’m not already taking out a loan to pay for school. Having this scholarship made me want to stay at home and staying at home my first year of college is a good choice.”
The VU Jasper Foundation is currently accepting applications for 2020-21 scholarships.
Each DCSEA recipient will receive full tuition (up to 15 credits per semester) and regularly assessed fees for the fall and spring semesters; a $500 bookstore stipend per semester for books and supplies; a laptop computer; and access to a dedicated Honors study lounge equipped with an interactive collaborative table and Wi-Fi.
Recipients will also participate in 10 community service hours each semester during the 2020-2021 academic year.
Applications for the Dubois County Scholastic Excellence Award are due Jan. 17.
The scholarship is available to any 2020 Dubois County graduate with a cumulative high school grade point average of 3.5 or higher.
