Bombers christen second half of season with a win

IMG_7918-640x320After closing the first half of their season with a big 7-2 victory on Tuesday, the Dubois County Bombers opened the second half of the season last night in just as impressive a fashion, downing the Owensboro Oilers 10-4.

Dubois County pressed the action all night long; the leadoff or second batter reached base for the Bombers every one of the eight innings. Plus, Dubois County had runners in scoring position with no more than one out in seven out of eight innings. And, the Bombers scored in every inning from the fourth through the eighth.

Owensboro scored in the first on an RBI single by Jake Wilson. They added another in the fourth when Justin Cessna doubled to drive in a run.

After threatening but coming up empty through the first three innings, the Bombers scored four times in their half of the fourth inning. Nick Gobert and Joe Sturino lined back-to-back doubles inside the third-base bag to score the first two Bombers runs. Two more came in on a single by Caleb Lonkard that featured a controversial obstruction call on the Owensboro catcher, Dalton West.

Owensboro recouped one run in the fifth when Cam Wallace and Braxton Brinkley opened the frame with consecutive doubles. This made the score 4-3 in the Bombers favor and it looked like it was going to be a slugfest.

However, Dubois County scored in each of the next four innings while reliever Dru Sebastian came out of the Bombers bullpen to shut down the second-place Oilers. Sebastian struck out two batters each in the 6th, 7th, and 8th innings, allowing no Oilers past first base. When Owensboro showed signs of life in the ninth, loading the bases with one out, Sebastian retired the next two hitters to close out the game.

Nick Gobert went 3-for-3 with three RBIs to lead the Bomber onslaught. Tirey Burch and Caleb Lonkard added a pair of hits each. Braxton Brinkley had a pair of doubles and two RBIs for the Oilers.

Dubois County starter Tyler Nichols gets credited with the win, his first decision of the season. Sebastian gets the save with four strong innings of work. Tanner Edge takes the loss for the Oilers. His record falls to 1-3.

The Bombers improve to 9-12 on the season. Owensboro falls to 14-7.
