Community corrections participant arrested for allegedly battering 9-month-old

Jasper — A Loogootee man was arrested Friday night for allegedly battering an infant.

The arrest is the result of an investigation that began July 30 when the 9-month-old boy was brought into Memorial Hospital with injuries to his genitalia. The medical staff determined the infant had injuries to his genitalia that consisted of bleeding and swelling. Memorial Hospital staff contacted the Indiana State Police about the suspicious injuries.

In working with the Indiana Child Protective Services, troopers were able to determine the suspect, Arvel R. Griffey, Jr., 24, Loogootee, had battered the child while in a car while Griffey was being taken back to the Dubois County Community Corrections Center.

After conferring with the Dubois County Prosecutor’s Office, troopers charged Griffey with Level 3 felony battery resulting in a serious bodily injury to a person less than 14 years of age.

He was picked up at the Dubois County Community Corrections Center Friday and transported to the Dubois County Jail. He is being held without bond.
