Adventure store moves to new location

Adventures Recreation & Gear has moved from the original location on Mill Street in Jasper around the corner to 204 E. Third Avenue.

The store specializing in outdoor recreation gear, bikes, clothing, shoes, playgrounds, trampolines and just about anything else necessary to have a good time, opened about seven and a half years ago in the building owned by Phil Mundy and his brothers.

Phil and his wife Karen co-own Adventures Recreation & Gear with his nephew Chad Mundy and his wife, Holly. They opened on Mill Street in 2007, sharing the building with the NAPA Auto Parts store and Seven Seas Pet Store.

According to Phil, when the NAPA store closed last year, they were going to have to do some extensive renovations for any new business to move in. “We decided it would be good to relocate our business there and then we had another business become interested in our original location,” he said.

After about a month of remodeling, the store opened March 1 in the new location and according to Phil, traffic has increased about threefold. “Now, when cars stop at the light, I can see the kids looking over and pointing at our trampolines,” he said. “After we opened and put our trampolines out, we had people coming in and saying how it was so great that a local business was carrying trampolines now.”

The store supplies just about everything someone seeking an adventure in the outdoors would need, but if a backyard adventure is all they want, they carry items for that also. They carry Woodplay Playsets and Goalrilla basketball goals and even help customers transport and install them.

“We build them (playsets) and transport and install them for our customers,” Phil said. “We also install the basketball goals. It saves people a lot of time and trouble.”

Phil and Chad also repair and maintain bicycles in the shop.

Besides the additional visibility from the traffic on Third Avenue, the store owners are happy to be in the midst of the transformation of the Jasper downtown and riverfront. “It’s a great view from here,” Phil said.

Adventures is open Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m to 2:30 p.m. The store number is 812-482-3757. They have a website here and can be followed on Facebook here.

Backyard and Beyond is a new business moving into Adventure’s former space. It is expected to open in April.
