Alpha Delta Kappa meeting minutes


Indiana Beta Gamma Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, the international honorary sorority of women educators, met on Thursday, October 12, in Holy Family Fellowship Hall, for their regular monthly meeting.  Connie Messmer Brenner and Barb Kendall presented the program and spoke on their trips to Alaska and Italy respectively. They shared slides of the sights they had visited. The October Hostess committee of Beth Meece, Karen Terwiske, Susan McGovren and Kathy Bachman  incorporated the Italy and travel theme and had lasagna, salad, cheesy bread pulls and desserts. Alpha Delta Kappa Month committee also had A?K Month favors on the tables for all.

Following the travels with Connie and Barb, President Ann Buechler called the meeting to order.  Chaplain Pat Seger read a Thought for the Day on “Being Kind”.

Secretary Kathy Bachman called the Roll of members.  Each member answered with a favorite place to enjoy fall colors.

Secretary Kathy Bachman had prepared the September minutes and they were shared via emails.  The minutes were approved by a motion made by Bonnie Wininger and seconded by Clara Fromme.

Treasurer Denise Heeke gave the financial report.  

Chairmen for the Standing Committees reported.

Paula Peter for Altruistic reminded everyone to keep track of all good work in the name of Alpha Delta Kappa.

Johnnie Heeke with Alpha Delta Kappa Month reminded members to report on items they did for A?K Month. Stella Bennett, as Chairman of the Indiana State A?K Month Committee stated that a report for A?K is due into the state in November.

Denise Heeke had no report for Budget.

Stella Bennett for Courtesy said that she had sent a card to Connie Messmer Brenner congratulating her on her recognition of 25 years of teaching.

Clara Fromme with Fraternity Education asked members to partner up with another member and time was spent discussing the several questions that were given pertaining to Beta Gamma memories.

Brenda Hurm with Membership reported that the executive board and her committee met to discuss the Chapter Needs Check-In and the report was typed and mailed.

Brooke Elrod with Academic Grant sent a press release to the media reporting on our scholarship recipient, Abbey Armstrong, receiving the State Scholarship. More information will be given to the press soon concerning the 2024 application.

Sandy Miller reported that she will have A?K yard banners for sale at Founders’ Day.

Ruth Gehlhausen reminded members to let her know of any possible places the chapter can visit for our Summer Outing.

Under Unfinished Business

Beta Gamma is in need of a president-elect after Melissa Schaber moved to South Carolina.

Founders’ Day will be held on Saturday, October 14, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. EST at the Schnitzelbank Restaurant in Jasper.  Beta Gamma chapter is hosting.  There are 20 reservations.  The 3Ps (as they are called) will be attending: President Laurel Van Dyke, President-elect Arlene Hart and Immediate Past President Alice Bartley will be present.  Past State Robbie Tribby will also be in attendance. Two members from Sigma Chapter and thirteen Beta Gamma members are registered.

A Founders’ Day ceremony followed at the meeting. LaVonne Tisdal, Johnnie Heeke and Jane Hunefeld reminded the members present of our founders and the purposes of Alpha Delta Kappa.

The hat was passed for altruism.

Melissa Schaber formally submitted a letter of resignation to President Buechler.  On a motion made by Janet Kluemper, seconded by Brenda Hurm and approved by all, her resignation was regretfully accepted.

As stated earlier in Brenda Hurm’s report on membership, the executive board and the membership committee met and discussed our goals and how we have met them this year.  After the meeting, Brenda Hurm and Ann Buechler completed the form that was provided.  Brenda Hurm then typed the form and sent it to Chloe Austin on September 29, before the October 15 deadline.

President Buechler recognized two (one active and one former member) in the news.  Former member LaVon Michel of Huntingburg, passed away on September 23, 2023.  Sandy Miller received an Honorable Mention Certificate of Recognition for Volunteerism from the Indiana Retired Teachers Association.

The Beta Gamma monthly minutes are once again being published in area media by secretary Kathy Bachman.

Members are reminded that the November meeting will feature our fundraiser.  Members are asked to bring a Silent Auction item (item or gift card).

The Christmas party will be Tuesday, December 12, at 6:00 p.m. at the Schnitzelbank Restaurant.  Members will order their choice of items off the menu.  A signup sheet was distributed by Paula Peter.  Contact Paula Peter if you wish to sign up.

The October Hostess Committee was thanked for the delicious meal.

Celebrating birthdays in October were Denise Heeke (Oct. 15th), Kathy Bachman (Oct. 21st), Barb Kendall (Oct. 23rd), Brooke Elrod (Oct. 23rd), Paula Alles (Oct. 24th) and Janet Townsend (Oct. 28th). Happy birthday.

The Active Teacher Drawing went to Brooke Elrod.

The Attendance Prize went to Sandy Miller.

The next meeting will be held on November 9 at Holy Family Fellowship Hall.  The Silent Auction Fundraiser will be held.
