End of an era, Fifth Street Elementary’s final Chili Supper

The final Fifth Street Chili Supper will take place this Friday evening the night of Jasper’s Homecoming game.

With the planned move into the new Jasper Elementary School in 2020, this is the final year for the annual fundraiser that started on October 20, 1978. Historically, it’s been a great fundraiser for Fifth Street Elementary School.

“This is our most successful fundraiser as it attracts many community members to Fifth Street Elementary School,” said Fifth Street Principal Ryan Erny.

The funds raised from the Chili Supper and other fundraisers are used to buy school supplies for all students, pay for field trips, fulfilling classroom needs, and enhancements to playground equipment.

The main event is Friday evening from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. but if you can’t make it then, you can pick up chili Wednesday and Thursday nights from 3 to 6 p.m. at Fifth Street.

Dinners are $7 and gallon containers of chili can be purchased for $15.

As part of the final event, Fifth Street students have teamed up with the Dubois County Humane Society to collect needed supplies. Donated items can be dropped off at the Chili Supper. They are seeking dry or canned food for dogs and cats (Purina is preferred), cat litter (clumping), leashes, harnesses, collars, Forever Stamps, printed paper, laundry detergent, PineSol (lavender) and tall kitchen bags.
