Famed Russian National Ballet brings classic tale to Jasper Arts Center

The Russian National Ballet will perform Cinderella at the Jasper Arts Center on Sunday, January 22, 2017, at 7:30 p.m.

This performance will be a full-length presentation of Cinderella in two acts. The timeless tale of romance and betrayal, intrigue and triumph, will be performed by some of the top dancers in the world.

The Russian National Ballet Theatre was founded in Moscow during the transitional period of Perestroika in the late 1980s. Many of the top dancers from across Russia, dedicated to the timeless tradition of classical Russian Ballet, joined the company. Today, the Russian National Ballet Theatre is its own institution, with more than 50 dancers of singular instruction and vast experience.

This production features the classic story of the beautiful Cinderella who is betrayed by her wicked stepmother and two stepsisters. In Cinderella’s father’s house, she is instructed by her stepmother to sew a scarf for the ball.  The horrible sisters begin to fray and tear the fabric of the scarf and then blame Cinderella. The royal dancing master interrupts the scene that ensues with an invitation to the ball. Everyone is invited, but Cinderella is left behind. Of course, the fairy godmother appears and the story runs the usual course.

The music is by Sergei Prokofiev, and the libretto was written by Nicolai Volkov. The choreography is by Rostislav Zakharov, and the stage production is by Elena Radchenko.  Sets and costumes were designed by Elizaveta Dvorkina, and lighting is by Marina Borodina. More than 50 dancers will appear in this elegant and inspiring production. Guests may meet some of the dancers after the performance.
