Martha Jane Gardner, 86, Ireland

Martha Jane Gardner, 86, of Ireland, passed away at 11:00 p.m. on Monday, January 18, 2021, in St. Charles Health Care Center in Jasper. 

Martha Jane was born in Washington, Ind., on March 21, 1934, to Charles and Stella (Gardener) Raymon.  

She married Donald  “Speck” A. Mehringer on April 10, 1958.  He preceded her in death on June 20, 1995. She then married James W. Gardner on November 14, 1999. He preceded her in death on December 19, 2003. 

She was a graduate of Petersburg High School. 

She was the owner and operator of the Shamrock Cafe in Ireland, Indiana, and also continued to work there many years after retirement. 

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ireland, Indiana, St. Ann’s Society, Jasper D of I, V.F.W. Auxiliary, and the Ireland Sportsman Club. 

She enjoyed fishing, crafting, and spending time with her children and grandchildren. 

She is survived by three children, Ed (Cheryl) Mehringer of Celestine, Kathy (Tim) Horney of Bloomington, and Jeff Mehringer of Jasper; four step-children, Jim Gardner of Jasper, Gail Gardner of Winslow, Sherry (Bill) Cole of Dubois, and Judy Kempf of Jasper; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several step grandchildren and great grandchildren.     

Private funeral services will be held. 

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church or to St. Charles Health Campus.
