Logan William, 23, was in the back seat of the Dodge. He left the scene on foot and was later found to be uninjured from the accident.

The investigation is ongoing and the Dubois County Sheriff’s Department is waiting on the results of a toxicology report. These reports take two to three weeks to complete.

Original Story:

Dubois County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the report of an accident on the 3400 block of County Road 125E, northeast of Jasper at about 6 p.m.

According to authorities, deputies were the first to arrive on scene and immediately requested ambulances and first responders.

At the scene, a 2003 Dodge Neon had ran off of County Road 125E and struck a utility pole. The pole was snapped and laying on the ground. The Dodge was on its driver’s side in contact with the pole and an electric ground wire was exposed while other lines were down across the vehicle.

Dubois Rural Electric Coop representatives responded to the scene to ensure the downed lines were not a threat to emergency personnel who needed to access the vehicle. After the lines were declared safe, the front seat passenger was extricated and transported to Memorial Hospital and then transferred to St. Mary’s Medical Center.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained in the accident.

Both occupants of the vehicle had their seat belts on at the time of the crash, police said.

A witness informed deputies of a possible third occupant of the vehicle that may have fled the scene on foot across a nearby bean field towards a treeline. Deputies searched the area but were unable to locate the third occupant of the vehicle.

Authorities are asking that if anyone has knowledge of this person’s identity to contact the sheriff’s department at 812-482-3255.

Deputies ascertained from the scene that the Dodge was traveling south on County Road 125E approaching County Road 300N when it went off the west side of the road into a grassy field. The car struck some landscaping stonework and then hit the utility pole.

Unsafe speed and road conditions due to the weather are considered to have played a factor in the accident, according to deputies.

Drug paraphernalia was also located in the vehicle during the investigation. According to deputies, the investigation is ongoing. They are currently waiting a toxicology report to be completed by the Dubois County Coroner’s office.

The names of the individuals involved and deceased have been withheld pending notification of the family members of the deceased.

Memorial Hospital Emergency Medical Services, Dubois Volunteer Fire Department first responders, Indiana State Police, Dubois REC and a Uebelhor and Sons wrecker assisted at the scene.

The sheriff’s department expressed sympathy to the family members of the deceased and thanked all those who assisted at the scene of the accident.

They also issued a reminder to the public to follow the established speed limits and to use extreme caution when driving in rain and snow.
